Rated 8.6 on IMDB.

John Healy’s powerful true story of his life and addiction was adapted by Emmy winner Frank Deasy (Prozac Nation) in 1992, and directed by BAFTA-nominee Gillies MacKinnon.

Oscar winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) stars as John Healy.

Born in London to poor Irish parents, brutalised at home and hardened on the streets by the age of 7, Healy is consumed by alcoholism as a teenager.  A promising career as a boxer is destroyed by drink . He becomes homeless and enters the ‘grass arena’, a savage community of vagrant alcoholics –  who will do anything to quench their thirst.

Eventually ending up in prison, he faces a certain death until a fellow inmate shows him how to play chess, for which he displays a natural instinct. One addiction is about to replace another.

“Some books have the power to change the way you think about life. In my case one such book was The Grass Arena.”  – Erwin James, Guardian
