Alan Bleasdale Presents film series released on DVD for the first time
All four films from Channel 4’s Alan Bleasdale Presents series are being released on DVD for the very first time: Blood on the Dole, Pleasure, Requiem Apache and Self Catering.
On the back of the success of landmark dramas including Boys from the Black Stuff, GBH and The Monocled Mutineer, in 1994 Channel 4 gave BAFTA winner Alan Bleasdale carte blanche to find and mentor up-and-coming new TV writers. What resulted were four films created for the Alan Bleasdale Presents series, produced by Alan Bleasdale and featuring cast members that have gone on to become some of Britain’s most beloved actors.
Blood on the Dole – Released on DVD 28th May 2018
Directed by BAFTA nominee Pip Broughton and starring RTS Best Actor nominee Stephen Walters (Layer Cake), Suzanne Maddock (The Bill), BAFTA-winner Aneirin Hughes (Eastenders) and BAFTA-nominee Amanda Mealing (Four Weddings and a Funeral).
Blood on the Dole tells the story of four Liverpool school-leavers looking for work and facing adulthood for the first time. But in a recession-hit Liverpool, the comforts and freedoms of a living wage are a tough ask. Drifting between the dole office and low-paid, seasonal, barely legal gigs they each try their best to piece together a potential future.
Written by Jim Morris and adapted from his stage play of the same name. Morris was voted Most Promising Playwright of 1981 by the Financial Times and Morning Star for the play.
Pleasure – Released on DVD 28th May 2018
BAFTA-nominees Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty) and Jessica Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty), and James Larkin (Call the Midwife) star in this raunchy reworking of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary directed by Ian Sharp (Golden Eye).
Emma Desneuves (Ehle) decides to spice up her dull married life in rural Rouen by responding to a lonely-hearts ad. What results is a whirlwind affair in Paris with Gustave Coudray (Dunbar), a feckless failed toy salesman, who sparks a riotous adventure that drags the loved-up pair into the midst of a police hunt for a masked robber known only as “Le Terroriste”. An exhilarating and bawdy road trip ensues with startling twists and turns.
Reqiuem Apache – Released on DVD 28th May 2018
A comic crime caper about a new Dad trying to escape his shadowy past, starring Alfred Molina (Feud), David Ross (Jake’s Progress/ GBH), BAFTA-nominee Amanda Mealing (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and Andrew Schofield (Sid and Nancy). Julie Walters also features in a memorable cameo.
Hamish (Molina) is a former getaway driver and new father who has retired to the Suffolk countryside to raise his baby on his own while his wife is away on a trip. One day Hamish’s hoped-for-peace is shattered when the old gang comes around for a visit. Hamish is made an offer he dares not refuse to take on one last bank job. But with no sitter available, it seems the baby will have to come along too!
Think Britain’s Baby Driver – but with more baby!
Self-Catering – Released on DVD 4th June 2018
A darkly comic tale of five survivors of a plane crash marooned on a desert island. Directed by Robin Leferve (Jake’s Progress) and starring Golden Globe nominee Jane Horrocks (Little Voice), BAFTA-nominee John Gordon Sinclair (Gregory’s Girl), BAFTA-nominee Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty), Noreen Kershaw (Life on Mars) and Andrew Schofield (Sid and Nancy).
The nerdy film buff of the group (Sinclair) compares their perilous situation with a string of movie plots. This leads each castaway to adopt the persona of their favourite Hollywood star in their interactions with each other. Lord of the Flies themes of isolation, power, social order and savage instinct play out in a succession of erotic, aggressive and comical encounters as we discover who will be top dog, and which of the survivors will be invited for dinner.
